How is your relationship with sin?

How is your relationship with sin? Not a question we ask very much - perhaps a question we don't ask at all, to our own disadvantage. We often say, "I'm doing such a great job keeping a consistent devotional life! And life is just going great right now!" while at the same time thinking, "Except for that sin that I can't seem to conquer. But God will give me grace . . ." and then we go on. Here are 35 reasons NOT to sin for when you are tempted.

1) Because a little sin leads to more sin.
2) Because my sin invites the discipline of God.
3) Because the time spent in my sin is forever wasted.
4) Because my sin never pleases but always grieves God who loves me.
5) Because my sin places a greater burden on my spiritual leaders.
6) Because in time my sin always brings heaviness to my heart.
7) Because I am doing what I do not have to do.
8) Because my sin always makes me less than what I could be.
9) Because others, including my family, suffer consequences due to my sin.
10) Because my sin saddens the godly.
11) Because my sin makes the enemies of God rejoice
12) Because my sin deceives me into believing I have gained when in reality I have lost.
13) Because sin may keep me from qualifying for spiritual leadership.
14) Because the supposed benefits of my sin will never outweigh the consequences of disobedience.
15) Because repenting of my sin is such a painful process, yet I must repent.
16) Because sin is a very brief pleasure for an eternal loss.
17) Because my sin may influence others to sin.
18) Because my sin may keep others from knowing Christ.
19) Because sin makes light of the cross, upon which Christ died for the very purpose of taking away my sin.
20) Because it is impossible to sin and follow the Spirit at the same time.
21) Because God chooses not to respect the prayers of those who cherish their sin.
22) Because sin steals my reputation and robs me of my testimony.
23) Because others more earnest than I have been destroyed by such sins.
24) Because the inhabitants of heaven and hell would all testify to the foolishness of sin.
25) Because sin and guilt may harm both mind and body.
26) Because sin mixed with service makes the things of God tasteless.
27) Because suffering for sin has no joy or reward, though suffering for righteousness has both.
28) Because my sin is adultery with the world.
29) Because, though forgiven, I will review this very sin at the Judgment Seat where loss and gain of eternal rewards are applied.
30) Because I can never really know ahead of time how sever the discipline for my sin might be.
31) Because my sin may be an indication of a lost condition.
32) Because to sin is not to love Christ.
33) Because my unwillingness to reject this sin now grants it an authority over me greater than I wish to believe.
34) Because sin glorifies God only in His judgment of it and His turning of it to good use, never because it is worth anything on its own.
35) Because I promised God that He would be the Lord of my life.

"If all the raindrops were lemon drops and gum drops . . ."

"What a day that will be!" I finished my journal entry off as neatly and as emphatically as I could on paper. Just a few minutes before, I had been studying (in my opinion) what is one of the most joyful and inspiring chapters of the Bible, Isaiah 35. It isn't long. Take a minute to read it right now.

The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad;
the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus;
it shall blossom abundantly
and rejoice with joy and singing.
The glory of Lebanon shall be given to it,
the majesty of Carmel and Sharon.
They shall see the glory of the Lord,
the majesty of our God.

Strengthen the weak hands,
and make firm the feeble knees.
Say to those who have an anxious heart,
“Be strong; fear not!
Behold, your God
will come with vengeance,
with the recompense of God.
He will come and save you.”

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,
and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
then shall the lame man leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.
For waters break forth in the wilderness,
and streams in the desert;
the burning sand shall become a pool,
and the thirsty ground springs of water;
in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down,
the grass shall become reeds and rushes.

And a highway shall be there,
and it shall be called the Way of Holiness;
the unclean shall not pass over it.
It shall belong to those who walk on the way;
even if they are fools, they shall not go astray.
No lion shall be there,
nor shall any ravenous beast come up on it;
they shall not be found there,
but the redeemed shall walk there.
And the ransomed of the Lord shall return
and come to Zion with singing;
everlasting joy shall be upon their heads;
they shall obtain gladness and joy,
and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

This chapter looks forward to the highest point of history - the Millennial Kingdom. This speaks of the very day of God's returning to earth. It is the greatest day in history-future. This day inspires hope (vs. 1-2); this day strengthens the feeble (vs. 3-4); this day brings healing and renewal (vs. 5-7); and this day includes a pilgrimage of the ransomed, redeemed ones of God going to Mount Zion, singing, rejoicing, with gladness and joy, and on that day, sorrow and sighing shall flee.

Isn't it amazing that there will be a day with no more pain, tears, fears, sin, sorrow, or death? Isn't that amazing?! Picture this scene in your mind, if you can. A disheartened, discouraged, defeated people, afflicted with blindess, deafness, and lameness. Imagine them seeing the lands of their neighbors, decimated by God's righteous wrath. But now where is God? Where is there hope?

And then imagine that nature begins to stir. Nature senses the dawning of a new day -a day of hope, blossoming, and rejoicing. And then the people understand. Their hope will be actualised today. The lame, blind, and the deaf stir, and suddenly, they can walk, see, and hear again. Yes, today is the Day! They will see, feel, and hear God's glory. God is coming! God is coming! God is coming!

The desert blooms and flows with water. The crocuses push up their oval buds. The rushes and reeds grow among the jackal's haunt. And on a new highway, the Way of Holiness, millions of pilgrimagers head toward Jerusalem. Singing. And it will be their pleasure through the long ages of eternity to sing of His love for them.

"Oh! What a day that will be!" Better than a day when all the raindrops become lemon drops and gum drops! A day when God's glory itself will be revealed!

Unity Quotables

"Few things are sapping the strength of the church of Jesus Christ more than the unreconciled state of so many believes. So many have matters deeply embedded in their craws, like iron wedges forced between themselves and other Christians. They can't walk together because they do not agree. Whey they should be marching side by side through this world taking men captive for Jesus Christ, they are acting instead like an army that has been routed and scattered and whose troops in their confusion have begun fighting among themselves."

Jay Adams
