Biblical Counseling and Economics

While studying biblical counseling, I've realized more and more the principles of economics: insatiable desires, and limited resources. (Who views life through the lenses of economics?)But aren't those two economic principles exactly what James is talking about in James 4:1-3?

What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

I clearly see here that humans have more desires than they can possibly humanly ever have fulfilled. Because the resources are limited and they see others who have the resources they want, we experience the ill effects of quarrels, fights, wars, murders, and coveteousness. The last word, passions, reminds us why we see this happening in our world.

Here's where Christ-likeness enters the picture. Jesus really only has one desire or all-consuming pasion, and that is glorifying the Father. He has no ulterior motives!! However, other people (saved and unsaved alike) are often driven by a plethora of (sometimes conflicting) motives. It should not surprise us that strife is a daily part of life.

So how can we eliminate these quarrels, fights, wars, murders, and coveteousness?

But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you. (James 4:6-10)

Just another list of rules, right? Well, yes, but not really. The emphasis is the first line of verse 6: “But he gives more grace!!” We can become more Christ-like through grace, and only through grace!

. . . and I can assure you that you won't learn about grace in economics. . .

California Gold Mine

I came to California to visit a college; I'm leaving having found a gold mine. Pretty exciting trip, eh?

So it's not a real gold mine, but I think it's even more exciting. Let me tell you all about it!

This evening my dad and I attended Grace Community Church for the evening service. I (just so happened) to be wearing my Do Hard Things shirt from Erica. We found a good parking spot and even better seats near the front of the auditorium. This was important, because I really wanted to meet John MacArthur :) Sure enough, he came by, and my dad and I stood up and said hello to him. A minute later we came back and sat down. We were sitting next to an Asian family, and one of the girls who is about my age said, "Excuse me, did you go to a Rebelution conference?" I enthusiastically replied that I had indeed attended two Rebelution conferences, one in Indy and the other in Maryland. She had noticed the shirt I was wearing and that prompted her curiosity.

A few minutes later I discovered that she was a member of the forum, her name was Sarah, and she was a native of the LA area. I told her that my dad and I were on the last of the round of college visits and had been visiting the Master's College. She told me that she took correspondence classes from there.

At this point I was very excited because I suddenly understood that Sarah was one of my class mates in Old Testament Survey I!!

Isn't God cool?!

Sarah was one of the people I was able to meet while I was in CA, and I met a lot of people and had just as many random connections with a lot of them. I was able to meet in person Savannah "Vevy" whom I knew also from the Rebelution and Facebook. I also got to meet up with Ms. Marla and her family this afternoon.

So what gold mine did I find? Here's just a few nuggets.

  • Friends and people
  • Professors with great knowledge and insight into God's word
  • An amazing college and church
  • Excellent food
  • The Pacific Ocean
  • Amazing scenery in the various "Santas" that I visited (Monica, Barbra, Clarita)
  • The Getty Center--a world renown museum of art and architecture

Picture posts coming soon!!
